Apple Tablet’s Killer App Revealed?

Apple TabletAccording to Gizmodo, an insider has revealed that the Apple tablet is indeed real, and mostly what people are expecting: A 10-inch touch-screen tablet running the iPhone OS, priced somewhere between $700-$900. However, there’s a twist. The tablet can act as a secondary screen/touchpad for Apple computers. This makes it different from and more appealing than every tablet that has come before.

Multiple monitors have gained tremendous appeal over the years, and it’s not hard to see why. Having a secondary monitor allows you to reference one thing while manipulating data on another. The more screens the better I say.

A lightweight tablet that can act as a secondary monitor is perfect for mobile professionals that need the extra real estate. Because it’s based on the iPhone, its hardware will be lighter and thinner than if it were based on the Intel Core 2 platform. The overall device should be about as portable as existing portable usb monitors like those by Mimo. By making the tablet thin and light, mobile users won’t mind slipping in their notebook case with their laptop. By further capitalizing on the tablet by using it as an input device, the Apple tablet becomes even more appealing. I’m a fan of the multi-touch input device used on MacBook pro laptops, and having a multi-touch display as an input device opens up a whole realm of possibilities, especially for graphic artists.

While the leaked information specifies that the screen/touchpad functionality works with Macintosh computers, I think Apple would be foolish to not market the device to the PC crowd as well. A stand-alone tablet is a hard sell at $700-$900, and the real value comes when it’s mated with a computer. Since the PC market is much bigger than the Mac market, Apple stands to sell many more devices by appealing to the broader audience.

Since one of the rumors that has been thrown about is a potential subsidy deal with Verizon for 3G data, I can’t help but wonder if the tablet can be used as a tethering device for a laptop. For lots of people, this might seal the deal. I find it hard to justify signing another wireless contract for web-surfing on a tablet or netbook; it becomes a better value proposition if internet access is also extended to a laptop. While I originally thought that an Apple tablet would be on overpriced toy, it sounds like Apple might be intent on making the tablet a valuable asset for the mobile professional.

Arsene Wenger: leaving Arsenal for Real Madrid would have been betrayal

Arsene Wenger - Arsenal's Arsene Wenger says accepting Real Madrid job would have betrayed his valuesStaying put: Arsene Wenger said it would have compromised his beliefs to have abandoned Arsenal this summer Photo: AP

The Frenchman was courted by the Spanish club earlier this year as they searched for a replacement for the outgoing Juande Ramos, but Wenger, despite describing the offer as ‘interesting’, honoured his promise to Arsenal and rebuffed the opportunity of a future at the Bernabeu.

Insisting he has unfinished business with the Emirates-based club, Wenger told the Times: “I want to go to the end of my job here. I built this team, I want to deliver with this team and I feel that if I left I would in some way have betrayed my beliefs.

“It is nothing to do with what Real Madrid have done. I just couldn’t see leaving this team at this stage of their development.”

Wenger stressed the main objective for him is to create a coherent team, rather than to try and build a side around a handful of key individuals.

“I believe in working in our job, creating connections between the players. I believe in what makes football great,” Wenger said.

“It is a team sport, a collective sport. You can win because you are more a team, or because you have more individual talent. What is interesting for me is the team ethic.

“I love Davis Cup, but I am not a big fan of individual tennis. It is when sport is about the team that I like it. I like the Ryder Cup.”

In the business for 30 years and in the hot seat at Arsenal for 13, Wenger’s experience dictates that he is one of the most successful managers the Premier League has seen, and the 59-year-old attributes his longevity to passion and sacrifice.

Explaining there is very little difference between life as a player and life as a manager, Wenger added: “Let’s say that for every passion you have a great price to pay. I believe that you have to put everything on your side to be competitive.

“As a manager, you have to live like a player. The time when you could go out on the booze and have drinks is over. You cannot afford one or two days when you are not totally focused.”

one of the best managers in the world. despite managing MU’s rival, Arsene Wenger is one of my favourite besides Fergie.. with his presence, we will see more attractive team-football from time to time. good job arsene.. article from Telegraph.

Visual Tyre Size Calculator

If you are thinking of changing your car tyre size or are planning on buying a new wheel/tyre combination then you can use the flash tool from Kouki for a visual tyre size comparison of your stock wheel and tyre size versus your new wheel and tyre combination.

//

Why is this important?

Matching the combined wheel and tyre diameter is important as it will ensure your ride height and speedometer readings don’t change drastically. An example of this would be fitting 17″ wheels to a car that has 14″ wheels as standard, there are three main consequences:

  1. the ride height will change, the car will be further from the ground.
  2. the top speed will increase slightly and the speedometer will under read.
  3. the car will acceleration slower.

Read on to see the reason for this in detail.

Tyre Size Guide

Ride Height

Take the default example in the flash tyre size calculator above, here we have a stock tyre size of 165/55R14 and a new tyre size of 215/45R17. There is a total difference of 8.82cm in the two wheel and tyre diameters, if we divide this by two we get a difference in radius of 4.41cm. If we ignore tyre pressures and the effects of adding larger, wider wheels to suspension geometry; then this is roughly how much higher the car will be from the ground.

Speedometer

Then there’s the speedometer, a cars speed reading is usually taken from the transmission and is set based on a number of predefined constants. When you change your wheel and tyre combination you are taking one of these constants and making it variable. The speedometer does not know the new value and so continues to read based on the original wheel & tyre size. If you look at the above default example again you will see that with a 215/45R17 wheel and tyre combination there is a difference of 16.4% in the speedometer reading over the stock setup. As you can see, at 60mph your speedometer should actually be reading 69.9mph!

Acceleration

If we fall back to the default example again, the 215/45R17 wheel and tyre combination has a larger overall diameter by 8.82cm. A larger diameter has a greater rotational inertia which requires more energy to accelerate. Or in other words: the bigger the wheel, the slower the acceleration.

It should be noted that putting a bigger wheel and tyre combination on your car does not reduce your cars power. Your cars power remains the same; however it takes more force to turn your car’s wheels resulting in slower acceleration.
